Terms of Service

These terms are the agreement between you and Tutype for using the website, apps and classroom tools. Please read them carefully, especially the sections on disclaimers, limits of liability and disputes.

Last updated 12 October 2026

1. Agreeing to these terms

Tutype is run by the person or organisation that operates this Tutype service ("Tutype", "we", "us"). By using Tutype, with or without an account, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use Tutype.

If you use Tutype on behalf of a school or other organisation, you confirm that you have authority to accept these Terms for it, and "you" includes that organisation. A separate written agreement signed with us takes priority over these Terms where the two conflict.

2. Children, parents and guardians

Anyone may practise without an account. If you are under 18, or under the age of legal adulthood where you live, you may only use Tutype with the permission of a parent or guardian or through your school. A child below the age at which they can consent to online services where they live must not create a personal account without a parent or guardian's consent.

A parent or guardian who allows a child to use Tutype agrees to these Terms on the child's behalf and is responsible for supervising that use, including the child's screen time and posture.

3. Your account

  • Give accurate information and use only your own account.
  • Keep sign-in codes and PINs private. You are responsible for activity on your account until you tell us it has been misused.
  • On a shared computer, check whose account is signed in and sign out when you finish.
  • Tell us promptly at the Contact page if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.

4. Schools and teachers

If you create a school or class, add students or invite staff, you confirm and agree that:

  • you have the authority to do so for your school, and you will follow your school's policies and the laws that apply to student information;
  • before giving us any learner's information, your school has obtained any notice, consent or permission from learners, parents or guardians that the law or school policy requires, and our Privacy Policy describes how we process it on your behalf;
  • you will give access only to staff who need it, share class codes only with your learners, and keep exported reports and PINs secure;
  • you are responsible for the accuracy of the information you add, for private notes you write, and for how your school uses reports and exported data; and
  • you will tell us without delay if you believe classroom information has been accessed without permission.

5. Acceptable use

You must not, and must not help anyone else to:

  • break any law or anyone else's rights, including privacy and intellectual property rights;
  • harass, bully, threaten or harm anyone, or post hateful, sexual, violent or otherwise inappropriate material, especially anything that could reach children;
  • access another person's account or data, guess class codes, PINs or links, or get around any access control, rate limit or security measure;
  • upload malware, probe or scan for weaknesses, or overload or disrupt Tutype;
  • scrape, copy or harvest content or data by automated means, or reverse engineer the service except where the law allows it;
  • misuse the AI features to create unlawful, harmful or misleading content, or present AI output as your own independent work where that is not allowed;
  • falsify results, certificates or progress, or misrepresent what a Tutype result means; or
  • resell, rent or commercially exploit Tutype without our written permission.

6. Your content

You keep ownership of the text you type, the writing you create and anything else you put into Tutype ("your content"). You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, process and display your content only as needed to provide and secure Tutype for you and, for classroom content, for your school. This licence ends when your content is deleted, except for copies already shared through a link you created, held in limited backups, or required by law.

You confirm that you have the right to use and share your content and that it does not break these Terms. We do not review all content, but we may remove content or limit features where we reasonably believe these Terms are being broken.

7. Our content and intellectual property

Tutype, including its software, lessons, passages, games, artwork, hand guides, design and name, belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by law. We give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to use Tutype for learning and teaching, in line with these Terms. You may not copy, sell, republish or create other products from our content without written permission. Feedback you send us may be used freely without any obligation to you.

8. AI features

Optional AI features use a third-party model (currently Google Gemini) to draft, extend, improve or review writing. AI output is generated automatically, may be inaccurate, incomplete, biased or inappropriate, and does not represent our views. You are responsible for checking it and for how you use it. Do not rely on AI output for any important decision. Do not enter personal, confidential or sensitive information. We may limit, change or remove AI features at any time.

9. Scores, placements and certificates

Speed, accuracy, placement, progress and AI marks are practice measurements that depend on the passage, practice mode, keyboard, device and help used. Certificates record completion of Tutype practice only. They are not an official qualification, accreditation or examination result, and we do not promise any educational, academic or employment outcome. Teachers should use their own judgment alongside Tutype's measurements.

10. Health and safe practice

Typing for long periods can cause strain or discomfort in the hands, wrists, arms, neck, back or eyes. Take regular breaks, sit comfortably, and stop if you feel pain, numbness, tingling, dizziness or eye strain. Some games use motion, animation and flashing effects; if you or your child have a history of seizures or sensitivity to light, take care and speak to a doctor first. Posture tips and the hand guide are general guidance, not medical advice. Adults supervising children are responsible for their screen time and breaks.

11. Changes, availability and third parties

Tutype is currently provided free of charge. We are always improving it and may add, change, suspend or remove features, lessons or the whole service at any time. We aim to keep Tutype available, but we do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error free or that progress will never be lost. Keep your own copy of anything important by using Download my data. Guest progress lives only in your browser and is lost if browser data is cleared.

Tutype relies on third-party services, such as hosting, email, sign-in and AI providers, and may link to other websites. We are not responsible for third-party services or websites, which have their own terms.

12. Ending your use

You can stop using Tutype at any time and ask us to delete your account. School-managed accounts are closed by the school. We may suspend or end your access, with notice where reasonable, if you break these Terms, if your use creates risk or legal exposure for us or others, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering Tutype. Sections that by their nature should continue after access ends, including sections 6 to 10 and 13 to 17, continue to apply.

13. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent the law allows, Tutype is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including any warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement, or that Tutype will meet your requirements, be secure, or be free of errors, interruptions or harmful components. You use Tutype at your own risk.

14. Limits of our liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we and our operators, contributors and service providers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, progress, profits, revenue, goodwill or opportunity, arising out of or relating to Tutype or these Terms, even if we were told such loss was possible.

To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability for all claims arising out of or relating to Tutype or these Terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for Tutype in the twelve months before the claim (which is zero for the free service) and 50 US dollars or its equivalent in local currency.

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or your rights as a consumer under mandatory consumer protection law. Where the law does not allow a limitation, our liability is limited to the smallest extent the law allows.

15. Responsibility for your use

If you are an adult or an organisation, you agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless us and our operators, contributors and service providers from any claims, losses, liabilities and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your content, your breach of these Terms or the law, or, for schools, information you gave us about learners without the authority or consent required. We will tell you about any such claim and may take part in its defence.

16. Disputes and governing law

If you have a concern, please contact us first at the Contact page so we can try to resolve it. You and we agree to try in good faith to settle any dispute informally for at least 30 days before starting formal proceedings.

These Terms and any dispute about them or Tutype are governed by the laws of the country in which the operator of this Tutype service is established, without regard to conflict of law rules, and the courts of that country have exclusive jurisdiction, except that we may seek urgent relief in any court to protect our rights or users' safety. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws and courts of the country where you live.

To the extent the law allows, claims must be brought individually and not as part of a class or representative action, and any claim must be started within one year after it arose, or it is permanently barred.

17. General

  • Changes to these Terms. We may update these Terms. We will change the date at the top and, for significant changes, give notice in the app or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use Tutype after a change takes effect means you accept it.
  • Whole agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Tutype, unless a signed written agreement says otherwise.
  • Severability. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect, and that part is applied to the fullest extent allowed.
  • No waiver. Not enforcing a right straight away does not mean we give it up.
  • Transfer. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms. We may transfer ours as part of a reorganisation, merger or transfer of Tutype.
  • Events beyond our control. We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as outages of internet, power or third-party services.
  • Language. If these Terms are translated, the English version applies where they differ.
