Every night for forty years, Tomas climbed the one hundred and twelve steps and lit the lamp. When the lighthouse became automatic, they gave him a clock and a speech. That first night at home he could not sleep, so he walked to the cliff and watched the light turn on by itself. He waved at it anyway.
