High in the Andes of Peru, the Inca built Machu Picchu in the fifteenth century. Its stone terraces held soil for crops and stopped the mountain from sliding away in the rain. The site was never found by the Spanish. Today, thousands of visitors climb to it each day to watch the clouds roll off the peaks.
