Between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, the city of Great Zimbabwe grew into a center of trade in southern Africa. Its builders raised curving granite walls without any mortar, fitting each stone by hand. Some walls still stand over ten meters high. Gold and ivory from the region reached ports as far away as China.
