In 1900, the British governor demanded the Golden Stool, the sacred symbol of the Asante people of Ghana. Yaa Asantewaa, the queen mother of Ejisu, refused to stand by. She led the Asante into war against the British. She lost the war, but the Golden Stool was never handed over, and Ghanaians still honour her courage.
