Amilcar Cabral was an agricultural engineer who studied the soils of his homeland before leading the fight for the freedom of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. He taught that a liberation movement must also build schools and clinics. He was killed in 1973, only months before Guinea-Bissau declared its independence.
