On 1 March 1896, the army of Ethiopia defeated the invading army of Italy at the Battle of Adwa. Ethiopia kept its freedom, and the victory gave hope to Africans everywhere. The country also has its own ancient script, its own calendar, and churches at Lalibela that were carved straight down into solid rock.
