Should Clubs Be Compulsory? · Apply

Goal: Type a full passage of real text at a steady pace. Longer practice: maintain a steady pace through the opening, body and conclusion. Accuracy comes before speed.

School clubs give pupils a chance to explore interests beyond the classroom. However, making every club compulsory may reduce the freedom that makes these activities enjoyable. Supporters of compulsory participation argue that pupils may discover talents they would otherwise overlook. A shy learner might find confidence in drama, while another might enjoy building a simple machine. This is a useful reason to introduce pupils to a range of activities. Yet a pupil may already have responsibilities after school, or may prefer an activity that the school does not offer. Attendance alone does not guarantee interest. A balanced approach would provide introductory sessions, then allow pupils to choose a suitable club and review that choice later. The school should encourage participation while listening to practical concerns. Clubs work best when pupils understand their purpose and have a meaningful say in how they take part.
