Soil erosion is caused by heavy rain, strong wind and human activity. Cutting down trees removes the roots that hold soil together. Overgrazing leaves the ground bare, and ploughing down a slope lets water wash the soil away. To reduce erosion, farmers can plant trees, build terraces and keep the ground covered.
