A rectangular classroom measures 8 m by 6 m. Its floor area is 8 x 6 = 48 m^2. If flooring costs 750 shillings per square metre, the material cost is 48 x 750 = 36,000 shillings. The perimeter is 2 x (8 + 6) = 28 m. Use area for flooring and perimeter for the strip around the walls; the two measurements serve different purposes.
